Podcast Show Hosting - BIPOC Creators Lead the Way

Podcasting is Becoming More BIPOC-LED

Introduction

The world of podcasting is more diverse than ever before, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) podcasting show hosts/ creators are leading the way. With podcasting’s popularity soaring as a form of entertainment, news, and education alike, podcasts hosted by BIPOC voices now account for over 40% of the collective audience of the podcast universe. This is a massive shift, considering that the U.S. population is only around 33% non-white.

Tony Hereau, VP of Cross-Platform Insights at Nielsen, believes that the industry’s welcoming entry barriers have allowed for a plethora of diverse voices and content to join the podcasting universe. For BIPOC creators and listeners alike, this diversity plays a crucial role in making podcasting so appealing.

Diverse Audiences – and Podcasts – are on the Rise

As BIPOC listenership and interest have grown, podcast publishers have taken note and are aligning their efforts to cater to their demands for increased diversity. Leading the charge is iHeartMedia, who launched The Black Effect Podcast Network in 2020. The network features curated content from Black creators, covering topics such as pop culture, comedy, mental health, and social justice. Sensing the opportunity, iHeartMedia has since announced that half of all podcast development will be dedicated to building a more diverse platform.
